Ways to Support our Mission of Culture & Performing Arts
The mission of Touchet Valley Arts Council (TVAC) is to preserve Culture and Performing Arts opportunities for youth and families in Columbia County and SE Washington. The performing arts are being defunded at a time when we need them most, and we are in need of support for the future beyond COVID-19.

Balcony Remodel Project
DUE TO THE REDUCED SCOPE OF OUR PLANS, WE ARE NO LONGER ASKING FOR DONATIONS FOR THE BALCONY
We have a complete architectural plan detailing necessary changes to the structure of our balcony space to accomplish multiple goals:

1. To substantially improve safety in the front row of the balcony, which is the primary reason for the project. STILL TRUE, BUT THE WALL WON'T BE CHANGED
The front row has inadequate space between the seats and the railing. There is barely room for your feet. Patrons are pressed up against the very low railing when entering or leaving, especially if they have to pass by someone already seated. The curved balcony front wall would be straightened and moved forward to widen this space and improve safety.
2. To widen and improve the landing at the top of the stairs from the lobby, (by the audio booth) to bring the landing and its railing up to current safety standards. WON'T BE CHANGED
3. To provide more leg room in all rows, in addition to the front row. The last row would be moved back, and the space more evenly distributed between all the rows. STILL TRUE, ALL ROWS WILL HAVE BETTER LEG ROOM AND SIGHT LINES
4. To improve visibility of the stage from seats in back rows of the balcony, by raising the seats higher, The back row would be raised up to the same level as the existing office and bathroom door openings, and the extra height distributed evenly down to the second row. This would be done by rebuilding the floor, from wall to wall including the steps, so there would not be a step up into the seats. STILL TRUE, but the aisles won't change, there will be a step up into the new rows, with a handrail.
As a bonus, the redesigned balcony would improve our audio and stage lighting "control booth". Also, a glass panel, on the right side of the drawing (where there is now a solid wall, by the stairs) will allow us visibility to add up to five additional seats. We expect to keep old-style seats in the back rows. WON'T BE CHANGED
February 2023: Because we had to scale back our plans, to a much more limited project, we are no longer asking for donations for the balcony.
Thank you for your support of this community center for performing arts and culture, civic events, and more!

UPDATED November 9, 2022 Because cost estimates nearly doubled during COVID-19, and we had difficulty finding a contractor, we have to pursue a more limited remodeling plan. This will consist of moving all the rows back, and farther apart; and raising the back rows to improve sight lines, but not moving the front wall or raising the walkways. This would be similar to what has already been done in the back section of the main floor. In September 2022 we started with a very limited remodel by moving balcony row 1 back 5 inches, creating adequate foot and leg room for safety, and moving row 2 back 3.5 inches to accommodate row 1. Row 1 has been reopened, but this has eliminated row 3 until we finish remodeling.
Update June 6, 2023: We started construction in late April, to finish in June, improving rows 3 through 6 for more leg room and better sight lines to the stage.
